Nintendo notes that an existing Expansion Pack Family membership can only be extended in Nintendo eShop on the console, not on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"family\">Family memberships: the credit card rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Family membership covers up to 8 Nintendo Accounts. You can pay for it with eShop funds, but there are two rules (<a href=\"https:\/\/en-americas-support.nintendo.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/42013\/~\/required-to-use-credit-card-when-purchasing-family-membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo Support<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You must be 18 or older<\/strong> to buy or extend a Family membership.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>You must save a credit card or PayPal account<\/strong> as the auto-renewal method before you buy. After that, you can still pay for the membership itself with your eShop funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only have eShop cards and no card or PayPal, buy an Individual membership instead. It is the cheapest way to play Mario Kart or Splatoon online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you also want Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis and GameCube games, or the upgrade packs and DLC that are included at no extra cost. It costs $49.99 a year for one account, so with $10 eShop cards you need five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not sure? Start with the standard plan. If you already have an Individual membership, Nintendo lets you change to another plan, sometimes at a discounted price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"auto-renew\">How auto-renewal works with eShop funds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your membership is set to renew automatically at the end of the term with the payment method you chose. If you chose a credit card or PayPal, Nintendo uses your eShop balance first and charges the rest to your card or PayPal (<a href=\"https:\/\/en-americas-support.nintendo.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/41195\/~\/how-to-purchase-or-extend-a-nintendo-switch-online-membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo Support<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To stop the renewal, turn off auto-renewal at least 48 hours before the membership ends. Your membership stays active until the end of the term, but you do not get a refund for the time left. Nintendo also warns that once auto-renewal is turned off, it cannot be turned on again for that membership (<a href=\"https:\/\/en-americas-support.nintendo.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/41196\/~\/how-to-cancel-a-nintendo-switch-online-membership-or-adjust-auto-renewal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo Support<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automatic renewal is not available for Nintendo Accounts under 18. If your child has their own Nintendo Account, a parent can also add them to a Family membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"extend\">Extending Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can add time to an active membership by buying the same plan again. Nintendo lets you extend a membership up to <strong>three years<\/strong> in total. This is a good way to use eShop cards: redeem them when you get them and buy another year before the current one ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you redeem a code for a different plan, the memberships may run at the same time instead of being combined. If you already belong to a Family membership, you cannot buy or switch to an Individual membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gift\">Giving Nintendo Switch Online as a gift<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card is easy. Send the code to the person, they redeem it on their own Nintendo Account and then buy the membership with the funds. Check their account country first: a US card only works on a US account.
