In a multi-column layout, it may match the width of the column instead. To add text above the line, put your cursor where you want the text and begin typing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changed your mind? Press <strong>Backspace<\/strong> immediately after Word creates the line. Microsoft\u2019s tip: this cancels the horizontal line and keeps the three characters you typed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"format\">Change the line\u2019s style, color or width<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The line you get from the shortcut is not a picture: Microsoft explains that it \u201ccreates an empty paragraph with a bottom border\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/word\/insert-a-horizontal-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>). So you change it with the Borders options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>Home<\/strong> tab, in the Paragraph group, select the arrow next to <strong>Borders<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>Select <strong>Borders and Shading<\/strong> at the bottom of the menu.<\/li>\n\n<li>In the dialog, change the line\u2019s style, color or width, then select <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>To apply your changes, select the <strong>Borders<\/strong> button again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the line is really a paragraph border, you can also turn it into a box: select <strong>All Borders<\/strong> or <strong>Outside Borders<\/strong> in the same menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"shapes\">Way 2: Draw a line in Word with Shapes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iqsix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/word-draw-a-line-shapes.webp\" alt=\"Draw a line in Word with Insert > Shapes: pick a line, drag, hold Shift for a straight horizontal or vertical line, then Shape Outline&#8221; class=&#8221;wp-image-1809&#8243;\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Draw a line with Shapes for any direction; hold Shift to keep it straight.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a line that doesn\u2019t run across the whole page, such as a short line, a diagonal line or an arrow, draw it as a shape (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/word\/draw-a-line-in-word-or-outlook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the ribbon, select <strong>Insert &gt; Shapes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>From the <strong>Lines<\/strong> gallery, select the kind of line you want to draw.<\/li>\n\n<li>On the page, click and drag your mouse to draw the line.<\/li>\n\n<li>With the line still selected, on the <strong>Shape Format<\/strong> tab, select <strong>Shape Outline<\/strong> to choose a color, a weight (line thickness) and line styling, such as dashes or arrowheads.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To draw a perfectly horizontal or vertical line, press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key while you draw. The same steps work when you write an email in Outlook; if you don\u2019t see the Insert tab there, select Pop Out to open the message in its own window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vertical\">How to add a vertical line in Word<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Word has two ways to put a vertical line on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Draw it.<\/strong> Select Insert &gt; Shapes, pick a line from the Lines gallery, then hold <strong>Shift<\/strong> and drag straight down. Shift keeps the line perfectly vertical (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/word\/draw-a-line-in-word-or-outlook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>). You can drag it anywhere, for example next to a paragraph you want to highlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Between columns.<\/strong> If your text is in newsletter-style columns, Word can draw the line for you (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/word\/adjust-column-widths-on-a-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>Layout<\/strong> tab (called Page Layout in some versions), select <strong>Columns<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>At the bottom of the list, choose <strong>More Columns<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>In the Columns dialog box, select the <strong>Line between<\/strong> check box, then select OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same dialog box lets you adjust the column width and the spacing between columns. Columns are a desktop feature: Microsoft notes that Word for the web shows newsletter-style columns, but you can\u2019t create or resize them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"example\">Example: a line under your name on a letter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common use: a simple letterhead with a line under your name and contact details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Type your name, address and phone number at the top of the page.<\/li>\n\n<li>Press Enter to start a new, empty line.<\/li>\n\n<li>Type three underlines (<strong>___<\/strong>) on that line by itself and press <strong>Enter<\/strong>. Word adds a thick line across the page.<\/li>\n\n<li>Want it in your brand color? Put the cursor immediately above the line, then go to Home &gt; Borders &gt; Borders and Shading, pick a color and select OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prefer a thinner line? Type three hyphens instead. Two lines? Use equal signs. The rest of the letter starts below the line as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mac\">Insert a line in Word for Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same shortcut works in Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac: type three hyphens, equal signs, underlines, asterisks, number signs or tildes and press Enter to get a full-width horizontal line. If you prefer, you can also draw a line (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/create-a-horizontal-line-708c51b7-55ba-4b52-b55a-f4268c59d1b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need a new line of text without a new paragraph? On a Mac, press <strong>Shift + Return<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/accessibility\/word\/keyboard-shortcuts-in-word\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keyboard shortcuts in Word<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"web\">Insert a line in Word for the web<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Word for the web supports fewer characters: type three hyphens, equal signs, underlines or asterisks and press Enter (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/create-a-horizontal-line-708c51b7-55ba-4b52-b55a-f4268c59d1b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>). Number signs and tildes don\u2019t make a line there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the other line styles, you can draw a line, or open the document in the Word desktop app: at the top of the ribbon, select <strong>Editing &gt; Open in Desktop<\/strong>. To delete several, select the first line, press and hold Ctrl while you select the others, then press Delete.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>A line you can\u2019t select:<\/strong> it is probably a horizontal border line, made by the three-character shortcut. Place the cursor immediately above the line. On the Home tab, select the arrow next to the Borders and Shading button, then select <strong>No Border<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"turn-off\">Stop Word from adding lines automatically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Word keeps turning your hyphens into a line, turn off the automatic line feature (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/word\/insert-a-horizontal-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Support<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>File<\/strong> tab, select <strong>Options<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>On the <strong>Proofing<\/strong> tab, select <strong>AutoCorrect Options<\/strong> and choose <strong>AutoFormat As You Type<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li>Clear the <strong>Border Lines<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n\n<li>Select <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only need it once? Press Backspace right after the line appears instead. Word cancels the line and keeps your three characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"problems\">Line in Word not working? Quick fixes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Typing &#8212; does nothing:<\/strong> type the characters on a line by itself, then press Enter. If it still doesn\u2019t work, Border Lines may be off in AutoFormat As You Type: turn it back on (see above).<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>### or ~~~ doesn\u2019t work in Word for the web:<\/strong> only hyphens, equal signs, underlines and asterisks work there. Use the desktop app for the other styles.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>You can\u2019t select or delete the line:<\/strong> it\u2019s a border, not a shape.
