How to Redeem an Xbox Game Pass Code in 2026 (Web, Xbox and PC)

Short answer: to redeem a Game Pass code, go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in with the Microsoft account you use on your Xbox, enter the 25-character code and confirm. You can also redeem it on your Xbox console (Store > View button > Redeem) or on a Windows PC in the Microsoft Store app. The Game Pass time is added to your account straight away.

This guide shows each way to redeem a Game Pass code, what to check first, how stacking works, and what to do if your code is not accepted. The steps come from Xbox and Microsoft Support, checked in October 2026.

What you need before you redeem

• The right Microsoft account. Sign in with the account you play with on your Xbox or PC. Microsoft warns that you cannot transfer a code to another account once it is redeemed.
• Your 25-character Game Pass code. For a digital code bought online, it is in the email from the shop.
• A matching region. Some codes only work in one country or region. A USA code needs a Microsoft account set to the United States (Xbox Support). Not sure? See how to check your account region.

How to redeem a Game Pass code on the web

This works on any phone, tablet or computer with a browser:

1. Go to xbox.com/redeem.
2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
3. Enter the 25-character code and select Next.
4. Check the product shown (for example Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, 3 months) and confirm.

This is the quickest way if you bought your code on your phone: the time is on your account before you even turn on the console.

How to redeem a Game Pass code on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, then select Store.
2. Press the View button to open the side menu, then select Redeem.
3. Enter the 25-character code, select Next and follow the steps.

The console uses the account that is signed in, so check the profile in the top left corner before you confirm. Typing 25 characters with a controller is slow, so many players prefer to redeem on their phone at xbox.com/redeem instead.

How to redeem a Game Pass code on a Windows PC

1. Open the Microsoft Store app (search for “Store” from the Start button).
2. Select your account picture in the top right corner.
3. Select Redeem code or gift cards.
4. Enter the 25-character code and follow the prompts.

After you redeem: check your Game Pass time

Sign in at account.microsoft.com and open Services & subscriptions. There you see your Game Pass plan and the date it renews or ends. A 3-month code adds three months to that date. If the new time does not show after a few minutes, sign out, sign back in and check again before you contact support.

How to start playing after you redeem

Once the code is redeemed, Game Pass is active on your account. On an Xbox, open the Game Pass section from the home screen, choose a game and select Install. On a Windows PC, open the Xbox app, sign in with the same account and install games from the Game Pass tab. With Game Pass Ultimate you can also play many games in the cloud without installing them, in a browser at xbox.com/play.

Your saves are stored with your account, so you can start a game on the console and continue it on your PC or in the cloud.

Ultimate code or PC Game Pass code?

Check the plan name on your code before you redeem it. A Game Pass Ultimate code covers console, PC and cloud. A PC Game Pass code only works for PC games, and you cannot swap it for console Game Pass later, because Xbox treats them as separate subscriptions. Essential and Premium codes give you their own, smaller libraries.

The product name usually shows the plan, the length (for example 3 months) and the region (for example USA). If any of these is unclear, ask the seller before you buy.

Prepaid code or monthly subscription?

Buying Game Pass with a prepaid code has a few advantages over a monthly subscription paid by card. You pay once for the whole period, you do not need to keep a bank card on your Microsoft account, and you decide when to add more time. Many players also use codes to control how much they spend on gaming each month.

Stacking Game Pass codes and the 36-month limit

You can redeem several codes to add more time. Xbox allows a maximum of 36 months of Game Pass Ultimate on one account (Xbox subscription limits). If a code would take you over the limit, you see the message “Hold off extending this right now”, and you can redeem it later when you have less time left.

If you already have Game Pass Essential, Premium or PC Game Pass, Microsoft converts your remaining time when you add Ultimate. Game Pass code not working?

• Code rejected. The most common reason is a region mismatch. Check that your Microsoft account region matches the code, and that your console region matches your location (Settings > System > Language & location on Xbox).
• “Hold off extending this right now”. You have reached the 36-month limit. Wait until your remaining time is shorter, then redeem the code.
• Already used. Each code works once. Check Services & subscriptions to see if it was already added to your account.
• Wrong account. A redeemed code cannot be moved. Make sure you are signed in to the right account before you redeem.
• Typing errors. The code has 25 characters. Check each one carefully, especially letters and numbers that look alike.
