Game Pass Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate: Which Plan to Pick? (2026)

Short answer: Game Pass Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate comes down to three things: how many games you want, whether you need new games on day one, and which extras you use. Essential ($9.99 a month in the US) gives you online console multiplayer and 50+ games. Premium ($14.99) gives you 200+ games, and new Xbox-published games join within a year of launch. Ultimate ($22.99) gives you 500+ games, new games on day one, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew.

This guide compares every Xbox Game Pass plan in plain words, shows who each plan is for, and explains what happens to your remaining time when you upgrade. It is based on Xbox’s official Game Pass page and Xbox Support, checked in October 2026.

  • Essential: online multiplayer, 50+ games, no new releases
  • Premium: 200+ games, new Xbox games within a year
  • Ultimate: 500+ games, day one, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, Fortnite Crew
  • PC Game Pass: 300+ PC games, day one on PC, no console
  • Upgrading: Xbox converts your remaining time at set rates

Game Pass Essential: online play and a starter library

Game Pass Essential replaced Game Pass Core in October 2025. It is the plan for people who mainly want to play online with friends on Xbox console.

  • Online console multiplayer.
  • 50+ games you can play on console, PC and other devices.
  • Cloud gaming: 5 hours a month from November 2026.
  • Microsoft Rewards points at the base rate.
  • No new games on day one and no EA Play.

Essential is a good fit if you buy the one or two games you play most, like a sports game or a shooter, and you mostly need online play for them.

Game Pass Premium: 200+ games, new Xbox games within a year

Game Pass Premium replaced Game Pass Standard. It is the middle plan, with a much bigger library than Essential.

  • Online console multiplayer.
  • 200+ games on console, PC and other devices.
  • New Xbox-published games join within a year of launch, not on day one.
  • Cloud gaming: 10 hours a month from November 2026.
  • 2x Microsoft Rewards points.

Premium suits players who like to try many different games and are happy to wait for new Xbox releases.

Game Pass Ultimate: day one games and every extra

Game Pass Ultimate is the full plan. It has the biggest library and all the extras, which our guide to Game Pass Ultimate perks explains one by one.

  • 500+ games on Xbox console, PC and the cloud.
  • New games on the day they launch. New Call of Duty games are the exception: they now join about a year after launch.
  • EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew included.
  • Cloud gaming: 15 hours a month from November 2026.
  • 4x Microsoft Rewards points.

Ultimate is the plan for players who want new games the day they come out and use one or more of the extras.

PC Game Pass: only if you play on a Windows PC

PC Game Pass ($13.99 a month in the US) gives you 300+ PC games, new games on day one on PC and EA Play, with 2x Rewards points. It does not include console games or cloud gaming. If you play on both an Xbox console and a PC, Ultimate covers both.

Game Pass Essential vs Premium: the key differences

Both plans include online console multiplayer, so the choice between Game Pass Essential and Premium is about the library:

  • Games: 50+ with Essential, 200+ with Premium.
  • New Xbox games: none with Essential, within a year of launch with Premium.
  • Cloud gaming: 5 hours vs 10 hours a month from November 2026.
  • Rewards: base rate vs 2x points.
  • Price: $9.99 vs $14.99 a month in the US.

If you mostly play online in games you already own, Essential is enough. If you want a big library and new games to try every month, Premium gives you about four times as many games for $5 more a month.

Game Pass Ultimate vs Premium: is the upgrade worth it?

Ultimate costs $8 more than Premium per month in the US, about $96 a year. For that you get:

  • New games on day one instead of within a year.
  • 500+ games instead of 200+.
  • EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew.
  • 15 instead of 10 cloud gaming hours a month.
  • 4x instead of 2x Rewards points.

A simple way to decide: if you would otherwise buy two or more new games a year at full price, or you already pay for EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics or Fortnite Crew, the extra cost of Ultimate is often worth it. If you are happy to wait a year for new Xbox games, Premium saves you money.

Which Game Pass plan should you choose?

Which Game Pass plan to choose: Essential, Premium, Ultimate or PC Game Pass, and how upgrading converts your time
Which Game Pass plan is right for you.
  • Choose Essential if you mainly want online multiplayer on Xbox console.
  • Choose Premium if you want a big library and can wait for new Xbox games.
  • Choose Ultimate if you want day-one games, play on console and PC, or use EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics or Fortnite Crew.
  • Choose PC Game Pass if you only play on a Windows PC.

Not sure yet? Start with the plan you need now. You can upgrade later, and Xbox converts the time you have left.

How upgrading works (and how much time you keep)

When you upgrade to Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox converts the prepaid time you have left on your old plan and adds it to Ultimate, rounded up to the next full day (Xbox Support):

  • Essential: 45% of your remaining time (90 days become 40 days of Ultimate).
  • Premium: 65% (90 days become 59 days of Ultimate).
  • PC Game Pass: 60% (90 days become 54 days of Ultimate).
  • EA Play: 25% (90 days become 22 days of Ultimate).

Upgrading from Essential to Premium works the same way at a ratio of 3:2, so 90 days of Essential become 60 days of Premium, up to 13 months. Xbox says conversion is final and non-refundable, and the rates can change.

Ultimate time can go up to 36 months on one account (Xbox subscription limits). Because you lose part of your time when it converts, the best plan is to choose the right one from the start: if you already know you want Ultimate, redeem Ultimate time directly. Our guide on how to redeem a Game Pass code shows the steps.

Tips before you buy a Game Pass code

  • Check that your Microsoft account region matches the code. Our guide on how to check your account region shows where to look.
  • Sign in with the account you play on before you redeem. A redeemed code cannot be moved to another account.
  • Stay under the 36-month limit for Ultimate, or redeem the code later.
  • If you pay monthly and want to stop, see how to cancel Game Pass.
