What Is a Gift Card Code? How to Use One Safely (2026)

Short answer: a gift card code is a one-time digital code that adds money or a product to one account on one platform, such as PlayStation Store, Xbox, Nintendo eShop or Steam. You type it on the platform’s redeem page, and once it is used it cannot be used again or moved to another account.

When you buy a digital gift card online, you do not get a plastic card. You get the code itself, by email or on your order page. This guide explains what is a gift card code in plain words, how it differs from a product key, where to redeem the codes for each platform, and the safety rules that protect your money. The safety advice comes from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the redeem steps come from each platform’s own support pages, checked in October 2026.

  • One code, one use: after you redeem it, the code is gone
  • One account: the value stays on the account you redeemed it on
  • One region: console cards only work in the matching account country
  • Keep it secret: anyone with the code can use it
  • Never pay bills with it: only scammers ask for gift cards as payment

What is a gift card code?

A gift card code is the number or mix of letters and numbers that holds the value of a gift card. On a physical card it is printed on the back under a scratch-off strip. On a digital gift card, the code is all you get, and it works exactly the same way.

When you enter the code on the right platform, the platform checks it, marks it as used, and adds the value to your account. That value can be wallet money (for example $20 of PlayStation Store funds) or a product, such as three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You can then spend the money or use the subscription on that account.

What a gift card code is, and the code formats for each platform.

Every code has a few things you should know before you buy it:

  • Platform: a PlayStation code only works on PlayStation, a Nintendo code only on Nintendo eShop, and so on.
  • Value or product: a fixed amount of money, or a fixed product like a subscription.
  • Region: most console cards are sold for one country, such as the United States.
  • Format: the length and style of the code, which tells you where it belongs.

Gift card code vs product key vs subscription code

People often use the words gift card code, product key and voucher code for the same thing, but they do slightly different jobs:

TypeWhat it addsExample
Gift card codeMoney in your account walletPSN $20, Nintendo eShop $10
Subscription codeTime on a membershipXbox Game Pass Ultimate 3 months
Product keyA licence for one program or gameWindows 11 Pro, Steam game key
The three common kinds of digital codes.

A gift card code gives you money to spend as you like in that store. A subscription code gives you a fixed membership time and nothing else. A product key unlocks one piece of software or one game. The rules in this guide apply to all three: each code works once, on one account, and must be kept private until you use it.

Code formats: how to tell which platform a code is for

You can often tell what a code is for by its length. These are the formats used by the cards we sell, from each platform’s redeem instructions:

PlatformCode formatWhere to redeem
PlayStation Store12 charactersPS5, PS4 or the PlayStation website
Xbox and Microsoft25 charactersxbox.com/redeem or the console Store
Nintendo eShop16 charactersNintendo eShop on Switch or online
SteamWallet code or game keySteam client or Steam website

If a 12-character code is rejected on Xbox, it is probably a PlayStation code. Microsoft product keys for Windows and Microsoft 365 also have 25 characters, so read the order details to see what you bought. On PlayStation, a 10-character code is a discount code that you use at checkout, not on the Redeem Code screen (PlayStation support).

Where to redeem the codes we sell

Each platform has its own redeem page. Our step-by-step guides show every screen:

PlayStation (PSN) codes

Enter the 12-character code in PlayStation Store on PS5 or PS4, or on the PlayStation website (Sony’s redeem page). Full steps: how to redeem a PSN gift card. Want PS Plus? See PlayStation Plus with a PSN gift card.

Xbox and Game Pass codes

Enter the 25-character code at xbox.com/redeem or in the Store on your console. Full steps: how to redeem a Game Pass code. Not sure which plan you need? Read Game Pass Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate.

Nintendo eShop codes

Open Nintendo eShop, choose Redeem Code and enter the 16-character code. Full steps: how to redeem a Nintendo eShop card.

Steam codes

Steam has one page for wallet codes (redeem a Steam Wallet code) and another for game keys. Full steps for keys: how to activate a Steam key.

Microsoft 365 and Windows keys

These are product keys, not gift cards. See how to redeem a Microsoft 365 key and how to activate Windows 11 Pro.

Why the region of a gift card code matters

Console gift cards are sold for one country. A US PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo card only works on an account whose country is the United States. If the regions do not match, the platform rejects the code, even though the code itself is valid. Our guide on how to check your account region shows where to see your country on each platform.

Steam is different: Steam converts wallet codes into your wallet currency when you redeem them (Steam). Game keys can still be locked to a region by the publisher, so always read the product page before you buy.

6 safety rules for gift card codes

6 safety rules for gift card codes: never pay bills with gift cards, never share the code, buy from a seller you can contact
6 safety rules for gift card codes (based on FTC advice).

A gift card code works like cash. Whoever types it first gets the money. Follow these rules to keep your code safe:

  1. Never pay a bill with a gift card. The FTC says: “Only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card,” and no real business or government agency will ever ask you to pay with one (FTC). Taxes, utility bills, fines and “refunds” are never paid with gift cards.
  2. Never share the code or a photo of the card. The code and PIN let a scammer take the money, even if you still have the card. Nobody from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or IQSIX will ask you for your code.
  3. Buy from a seller you can contact. Use a shop with a real contact address and a clear refund policy, so you have someone to talk to if a code does not work.
  4. Sign in to the right account first. A redeemed code cannot be moved to another account, so check who is signed in, especially on a shared console.
  5. Redeem the code soon. A code sitting in your email can be lost or seen by others. Redeem it when you receive it.
  6. Keep your order email and receipt. The FTC says to always keep a copy of your gift card and receipt. You need them if there is a problem.

What to do if a gift card code does not work

Most problems have a simple cause. Check these in order:

  1. Typing errors: letters like O and 0, or I and 1, are easy to mix up. Copy and paste the code, or type it again slowly.
  2. Wrong platform: check the code length against the table above.
  3. Wrong region: your account country must match the card.
  4. Already redeemed: look in your account’s transaction history, the value may already be there.
  5. Platform problem: sometimes the store service is down. Wait and try again later.

Still not working? Contact the shop you bought from with your order number and a screenshot of the error message. At IQSIX, send us your order number on WhatsApp or through our contact page. Xbox explains its own code errors on Xbox Support, and Sony on PlayStation support.

What to do if you paid a scammer with a gift card

If someone tricked you into buying gift cards and sending them the codes, act fast. The FTC gives these steps:

  1. Contact the gift card company right away, no matter how long ago it happened. Tell them the card was used in a scam.
  2. Ask for your money back. If you act quickly, some companies may be able to return it.
  3. Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
  4. Keep the card and the receipt, because you need them for the report.

Gift card code FAQ

What is a gift card code?

It is the one-time code that holds the value of a gift card. When you enter it on the right platform, the money or product is added to your account and the code can no longer be used.

Is a digital gift card code the same as a physical gift card?

Yes. A physical card has the same code printed on the back under a scratch-off strip. With a digital card you simply get the code by email.

Can I use a gift card code on another account after redeeming it?

No. The value stays on the account you redeemed it on and cannot be moved. Sign in to the right account before you redeem.

Why does my gift card code say it is not valid?

The most common causes are a typing error, a code for another platform, or an account region that does not match the card. Check the code length and your account country.

Is it safe to share a gift card code?

No. Anyone with the code can use it. The FTC says never to give the numbers or a photo of the card to anyone who asks for them.

Can someone ask me to pay with a gift card code?

Only scammers do that. The FTC says no real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them.
