Redeem the card to add the money to your PlayStation wallet, then choose a PlayStation Plus plan and pay with your wallet funds. Sony says gift card credit can be used to buy any PlayStation Plus membership. To avoid surprise charges later, turn off auto-renew after you subscribe.

Can you buy PlayStation Plus with a PSN gift card?
Yes. According to PlayStation, the credit from a PlayStation Store gift card can be used to purchase any PlayStation Plus membership. The card adds money to your wallet, and PlayStation Plus is paid from that wallet like any other purchase.
There are also PlayStation Plus vouchers that give a fixed membership instead of money; Sony explains them in its PlayStation Plus vouchers guide. A normal PSN gift card is more flexible, because you choose the plan and length yourself.

How to pay for PlayStation Plus with a PSN gift card
- Redeem your PSN gift card: open PlayStation Store, choose Redeem Code and enter the 12-digit code (our guide on how to redeem a PSN gift card shows every device).
- Open PlayStation Plus from PlayStation Store or on your console, and choose a plan (Essential, Extra or Premium) and a length.
- At checkout, your wallet funds are used first. If your wallet has enough money, nothing else is charged.
- Confirm the purchase. Your PlayStation Plus membership starts right away.
If your wallet does not have enough money for the plan you want, redeem another card first, or choose a shorter plan. Any money left after paying stays in your wallet for games and add-ons.
PlayStation Plus gift card or voucher: what is the difference?
People use “PlayStation Plus gift card” for two different things. A PSN gift card adds money to your wallet, and you decide what to spend it on, including PlayStation Plus. A PlayStation Plus voucher gives one specific membership, for example 12 months of Essential, and nothing else. The gift card is more flexible: you can change plans, combine cards, or spend the rest on games.
How renewals work with wallet funds
PlayStation Plus is a subscription, so it renews automatically unless you turn that off. Sony’s terms of service explain that a renewal can be paid from your wallet balance, and that a saved payment method may be charged for any part the wallet does not cover.
In some regions, buying a subscription also switches on automatic wallet funding, which tops up your wallet from your saved payment method when a renewal is due. You can switch it off in your wallet or transaction settings (PlayStation: automatic wallet funding).
How to turn off auto-renew for PlayStation Plus
If you want to pay only with gift cards, turn off auto-renew right after you subscribe (PlayStation Support):
- On the web: sign in to Account Management, open your subscriptions and select Turn Off Auto-Renew next to PlayStation Plus.
- On PS5: go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions, select PlayStation Plus and turn off auto-renewal.
Your membership keeps running until its end date. When it ends, redeem a new card and buy PlayStation Plus again, and you never pay more than you put in your wallet. If you change your mind, you can turn auto-renew back on from the same menus.
Check when your membership ends
To see how long your PlayStation Plus has left, sign in to Account Management and open your subscriptions, or on PS5 go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions. Note the end date, so you know when to redeem your next PSN gift card.
Giving PlayStation Plus as a present
A PSN gift card is an easy way to give PlayStation Plus to someone else. Send them the code; they redeem it on their own account and choose the plan they want. Check their account region first, because the card must match it. If they already have PlayStation Plus, the money still helps: they can use it for the next renewal or for games.
Which PSN card value do you need?
PlayStation Plus prices depend on your country, the plan and the length, and they can change, so check the current price on the PlayStation Plus page for your region first. Then pick card values that add up to at least that price. You can combine several cards: every redeemed card adds to the same wallet.
Remember that the card must be from the same region as your PlayStation account. A US card works only on an account set to the United States.
Essential, Extra or Premium?
PlayStation Plus has three plans. Essential covers online multiplayer, monthly games and cloud saves. Extra adds a catalogue of games to download and play. Premium adds even more, such as classic games and game trials. If you mostly play online with friends, Essential is often enough; if you want many games to try, look at Extra or Premium. Not sure yet? Start with a short Essential plan, see how much you play online, and choose a bigger plan with your next PSN gift card. Our full comparison of PS Plus Essential vs Extra vs Premium shows prices and benefits side by side.
Common questions about wallet funds
- Can I get the money back? Sony’s terms say wallet funds are non-refundable and cannot be transferred, except where the law requires.
- Do I need a credit card? No. You can pay entirely with gift cards if your wallet has enough funds.
- Can I use the funds for games too? Yes. Wallet funds work for games, add-ons and subscriptions in PlayStation Store.
- Is there a wallet limit? Yes, Sony limits how much one wallet can hold, so add cards as you need them.
What happens when your membership ends?
When PlayStation Plus ends, online multiplayer in paid games stops until you subscribe again, and the monthly games you added to your library can only be played while you are a member. Games from the Extra and Premium catalogues also stop working. Games you bought stay yours, and when you come back, the monthly games you claimed earlier are playable again.
Tips to spend less on PlayStation Plus
- Longer plans usually cost less per month than buying one month at a time, so compare the prices in your store.
- Use a PlayStation Plus gift card strategy: buy cards when you need them, keep auto-renew off, and you never pay more than planned.
- Watch for PlayStation Store sales on memberships, which happen from time to time.
- If you only play single-player games, you may not need PlayStation Plus at all.
Buying PlayStation Plus for a child
On child accounts, the family manager usually redeems wallet cards and controls spending limits. Sony notes that in some regions automatic wallet funding is not available for players under 18, so the family manager has to add funds for each renewal. Check the family settings in Account Management before you buy, and agree with your child which plan they really need.
