PS Plus Essential vs Extra vs Premium: prices

Here are the US prices for each plan and length, from PlayStation:
| Plan | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
PlayStation says the 12-month plan saves 39% compared with paying monthly for Essential, and 33% for Extra and Premium. If you know you will play all year, the 12-month plan is the cheapest way to pay.
Monthly, 3 months or 12 months?
Each plan comes in three lengths. Here is what you pay over a full year:
- Essential: 12 × $10.99 = $131.88 a year if you pay monthly, or $79.99 for the 12-month plan. You save $51.89.
- Extra: 12 × $16.99 = $203.88 monthly, or $134.99 for 12 months. You save $68.89.
- Premium: 12 × $19.99 = $239.88 monthly, or $159.99 for 12 months. You save $79.89.
The 3-month plans sit in the middle. They are a good way to try Extra or Premium for a season, for example over the holidays, without paying for a full year. If you only want to play online for one weekend tournament, a 1-month Essential plan is enough.
What each PS Plus plan includes
Every plan includes the Essential benefits. Extra and Premium add more on top:
| Benefit | Essential | Extra | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online multiplayer | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Monthly games | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cloud saves, Share Play | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Game Catalog | – | Yes | Yes |
| Ubisoft+ Classics | – | Yes | Yes |
| Classics Catalog | – | – | Yes |
| Game trials | – | – | Yes |
| Cloud streaming | – | – | Yes |
| Sony Pictures Catalog | – | – | Yes |
Essential: online play and monthly games
Essential is the basic plan. You need it to play most games online: PlayStation says that for the majority of games bought on disc or in PlayStation Store, you need a PlayStation Plus plan to play online. Most free-to-play games, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone, do not need a membership.
Essential also gives you monthly games to claim, exclusive discounts in PlayStation Store, exclusive content for some free-to-play games, cloud storage for your game saves and Share Play.
PS Plus Extra: the Game Catalog
Extra adds the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, an on-demand library of hundreds of games to download and play, plus a selection of Ubisoft+ Classics, which PlayStation says is worth $7.99 a month on its own. If you finish games quickly and like to try new ones, Extra gives you the most games for the price.
PS Plus Premium: classics, trials, streaming and movies
Premium adds the Classics Catalog of games from PlayStation history, game trials so you can try games before you buy them, and cloud streaming. PlayStation says you can stream a huge range of PS5 titles with no downloading, and stream games from the Game Catalog plus hundreds of PS3 and PS2 classics. Premium also includes the Sony Pictures Catalog, with up to 100 movies on demand.
Which PS Plus plan should you choose?

- Choose Essential if you mainly play online in games you already own, for example sports or shooter games with friends.
- Choose Extra if you want hundreds of games to play without buying each one.
- Choose Premium if you love older PlayStation games, want to stream games without downloading, or want to try new games before you buy.
On a 12-month plan, Essential works out at about $6.67 a month, Extra at $11.25 and Premium at $13.33. So the step from Essential to Extra costs about $4.58 a month for hundreds of extra games, and the step from Extra to Premium about $2.08 a month for classics, trials, streaming and movies. For many players, that makes Extra the sweet spot, and Premium worth it if you will use streaming or the classics.
Still deciding between PS Plus Extra vs Premium? If you will not use streaming or the classics, Extra is enough. Not sure at all? Start with Essential or a short Extra plan. You can change your plan later.
Are PS Plus games yours to keep?
Yes, but only while your membership is active. PlayStation says games from PS Plus are yours for as long as you remain an active member. Some games in the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog also leave the service on an end date, which PlayStation announces ahead of time. If your membership ends, you lose access to these games until you subscribe again.
Upgrading and downgrading your plan
You can move to a bigger plan when you want more games. To downgrade from Premium or Extra, go to Account Settings > Subscriptions Management on PS5 or PS4, or sign in on the PlayStation website and open Subscriptions Management. PlayStation says a downgrade happens at the end of your prepaid (stacked) time, and you lose the extra benefits at that point.
If you redeem a PlayStation Plus voucher while you already have a membership, PlayStation converts it to time on your current plan based on its value. For example, a 1-month PlayStation Plus voucher gives about three weeks of Extra.
How to pay for PS Plus with PSN gift cards
You can pay for any PS Plus plan with wallet funds from PSN gift cards. Redeem the cards first, then choose the plan in PlayStation Store. Our guide on buying PlayStation Plus with a PSN gift card shows every step, and how to redeem a PSN gift card shows how to add the funds.
These combinations of US PSN cards cover a 12-month plan (prices before any sales tax):
| 12-month plan | Price | PSN cards |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | $79.99 | $50 + $20 + $10 |
| Extra | $134.99 | $100 + $50 |
| Premium | $159.99 | $100 + $50 + $10 |
PS Plus renews automatically at the then-current PlayStation Store price until you cancel. If you pay with gift cards, keep enough funds in your wallet before the renewal date, or turn off auto-renew.
PS Plus for children and families
PlayStation says PS Plus content and services vary by the age of the subscriber, and members below the legal age of majority need a parent’s consent. On a family account, the parent usually manages the subscription and the wallet.
A gift card is a simple way to pay for a child’s PS Plus: the parent redeems the card on the family manager account and controls the spending. Our guide on redeeming a PSN gift card explains how child accounts work.
Region: US cards for US accounts
PSN gift cards only work on an account from the same country. Our cards are US cards, so your PlayStation account must be set to the United States. See how to check your account region before you buy.
5 tips before you subscribe
- Check the game list first. The Game Catalog and Classics Catalog change over time. Look at the current games on PlayStation’s PS Plus page to see if your favourites are there.
- Pick the 12-month plan if you will play all year: it saves 33–39% compared with paying monthly.
- Check auto-renew. PS Plus renews at the then-current price until you cancel, so note the renewal date.
- Keep your codes private. A PSN code works like cash until it is redeemed.
- Match the region. Use US cards on a US account only.
