Microsoft 365 Personal vs Family: Which Plan Is Right for You? (2026)

Short answer: Microsoft 365 Personal vs Family comes down to how many people will use it. Personal ($99.99 a year in the US) is for one person with 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Family ($129.99 a year) is for up to six people, each with their own account, sharing 2 TB of storage. Both include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, five signed-in devices per person, and Copilot for the subscription owner.

This guide compares Microsoft 365 Personal and Family in plain words: price, people, storage, Copilot and sharing. It also shows the cost per person, how to switch from Personal to Family, and what happens when you add a product key to an account that already has a subscription. Everything comes from Microsoft’s plan comparison and Microsoft Support, checked in October 2026.

  • Personal: 1 person, 1 TB, $99.99 a year
  • Family: up to 6 people, 2 TB shared, $129.99 a year
  • Both: Office apps on 5 devices at once per person
  • Copilot: for the subscription owner only, on both plans
  • Switching: Personal time converts to Family time at 92%

The apps are the same in both plans: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote as desktop apps on Windows and Mac, plus the mobile apps, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Defender security and Access on Windows PCs. The difference is the number of people and the storage.

Price per person: when Family is cheaper

Microsoft 365 Family costs $30 more per year than Personal, but it covers up to six people. As soon as two people need Office, Family is the cheaper choice:

PeoplePersonal plansOne Family plan
1$99.99$129.99
2$199.98$129.99
3$299.97$129.99
6$599.94$129.99 ($21.67 each)
Yearly US prices. Family covers up to six people.

If you are the only person who needs Office, Personal is the better deal: you pay less and still get 1 TB of storage and Copilot.

Monthly or yearly: which saves more?

Both plans can be paid monthly or yearly. Microsoft says you save up to 17% when you pay yearly (Microsoft):

  • Personal: $9.99 a month is $119.88 a year, so the yearly plan at $99.99 saves you $19.89.
  • Family: $12.99 a month is $155.88 a year, so the yearly plan at $129.99 saves you $25.89.

Monthly billing makes sense if you only need Office for a short project. If you use it all year, a yearly plan or a yearly product key costs less. A subscription bought from Microsoft renews automatically at the regular price unless you cancel it in your Microsoft account.

Who should choose Microsoft 365 Personal?

Microsoft 365 Personal is for one person. Choose it if:

  • You are the only one in your home who needs Word, Excel or Outlook.
  • You want 1 TB of OneDrive storage just for your own files and photos.
  • You use Office on your own laptop, phone and tablet (up to five signed in at once).
  • You want Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint for yourself.

Personal cannot be shared. Microsoft says sharing is not available on Microsoft 365 Basic or Personal subscriptions. If your partner or children start needing Office later, you can switch to Family.

Who should choose Microsoft 365 Family?

Microsoft 365 Family is for households. Choose it if:

  • Two to six people need Office apps, each with their own Microsoft account.
  • Each person should keep their own files, email and settings private.
  • You want one bill for the whole household.
  • You need more than 1 TB of storage in total.

Each person on a Family plan gets the full apps on up to five of their own devices at the same time (how the devices limit works). Their files and mailbox stay private: the others cannot see them.

Storage: 1 TB vs 2 TB shared (new in October 2026)

Microsoft changed Family storage in October 2026. Starting 8 October 2026, all new Microsoft 365 Family subscribers, including people whose subscription expired and who buy again, get 2 TB of pooled storage, shared by everyone on the plan. Existing Family subscribers move to 2 TB pooled storage when their subscription renews from 2 May 2027 (Microsoft Support).

Pooled means the 2 TB is one shared allowance, not 2 TB each. Each person’s files and email still stay private. Personal keeps 1 TB for one person. If one person in the family stores a lot of video, that uses up space the others could need, so check your OneDrive usage before you choose.

Copilot: who gets the AI features?

Both plans include Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, with higher usage than the free version. But on Family, Microsoft says the AI features are only available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with others (Microsoft). The other five people get the apps and storage, not Copilot.

If you want much more AI usage, Microsoft also sells Microsoft 365 Premium ($199.99 a year in the US) with extensive Copilot usage. For most people, Personal or Family is enough.

How to share Microsoft 365 Family

How Microsoft 365 Family sharing works: the owner invites up to 5 people, each with their own account
How Microsoft 365 Family sharing works.

Only the subscription owner can share Microsoft 365 Family. Microsoft’s steps (Microsoft Support):

  1. Go to the sharing page at account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing and sign in with the owner account.
  2. Select Share. If you do not see it, you are probably not the owner of the subscription.
  3. Invite each person by email, or create a link and send it to them.
  4. The person accepts the invitation within 48 hours and joins your family group.
  5. They sign in with their own Microsoft account and install the apps on their devices.

Do not send your product key to the people you want to share with. Microsoft says product keys cannot be used for sharing: use the email invite or the link instead. One key is redeemed once, on the owner’s account.

You can share with up to five other people. A person who is already in another Microsoft family group must leave it first. If you stop sharing with someone, their files stay, but they lose the subscription benefits.

Switching from Personal to Family

You can upgrade from Personal to Family at any time. When you do, Microsoft converts the time you have left on Personal and adds it to Family. From Personal to Family you keep 92% of your remaining days (Microsoft’s conversion table). For example, 100 days of Personal become 92 days of Family.

If you have a Family product key, go to microsoft365.com/setup and sign in with the same Microsoft account as your Personal subscription. After you enter the key, Microsoft shows you the options for switching your plan. If you bought Personal through Apple or Google, you must cancel or change it there first.

Adding a product key to an existing subscription

A Microsoft account can have only one active Microsoft 365 subscription. If you redeem another key for the same plan, you get more time, not more devices or storage. Microsoft lets you extend a subscription for up to 5 years in total (Microsoft Support).

This is useful if you buy a yearly key before your subscription ends: redeem it on the same account and the year is added to the time you have left. Our guide on how to redeem a Microsoft 365 product key shows each step, including what to do if the key is not accepted.

Personal vs Family: quick decision

  • Just you? Choose Personal.
  • Two or more people? Choose Family. It is cheaper from two people.
  • Need more than 1 TB? Choose Family (2 TB shared).
  • Need lots of AI? Look at Premium.
  • Only need the apps on one PC, no storage? A one-time Office purchase may fit, but it gets no new features. See Microsoft 365 vs Office 2024.
