Windows 11 Home vs Pro: Which One Do You Need? (2026)

Short answer: in the Windows 11 Home vs Pro choice, both editions run the same apps and games and get the same security basics. Pro adds tools for security, remote work and business: full BitLocker Drive Encryption, Remote Desktop so others can connect to your PC, Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox for virtual machines, Group Policy, and joining a work domain or Microsoft Entra ID. For browsing, study and gaming, Home is enough; if you need any of those extras, choose Pro.

This guide compares Windows 11 Home vs Pro feature by feature, explains who needs Pro, and shows how to upgrade from Home to Pro without reinstalling. It is based on Microsoft’s comparison page and Microsoft documentation, checked in October 2026.

What Windows 11 Pro adds over Home.

What Windows 11 Pro adds, explained

BitLocker Drive Encryption. Home has device encryption on supported hardware, which protects the data on your PC if it is lost or stolen. Pro adds full BitLocker, with more control: you can encrypt extra drives and USB sticks and manage the recovery keys yourself. More in does Windows 11 Home have BitLocker?

Remote Desktop. Both editions can connect to another PC with Remote Desktop, but only Pro can be the PC you connect to. If you want to reach your home or office computer from a laptop elsewhere, that computer needs Pro.

Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox. Pro can run virtual machines with Hyper-V and open a throw-away Windows Sandbox to test unknown files or apps safely (Microsoft: Windows Sandbox). Both need a processor with virtualization support turned on.

Group Policy and domain join. Pro includes the Group Policy Editor to control Windows settings in detail, and it can join a company domain or Microsoft Entra ID. Many workplaces require Pro for this reason.

Who should choose Windows 11 Home?

Home is the right choice for most people at home. If you browse, stream, study, use Office and play games, you will not notice any difference between Home and Pro. Games run the same on both editions, with the same graphics features, Xbox app and Game Bar.

Home is also what most new laptops come with, so if your laptop already has Windows 11 Home and you do not need the Pro tools, there is no reason to change. If you mainly use your computer for social media, video calls and photos, the extra tools would sit unused, and your money is better spent on more storage or memory.

Windows 11 Home vs Pro: which one do you need
A quick way to choose between Windows 11 Home and Pro.

Who needs Windows 11 Pro?

  • Freelancers and small businesses who want BitLocker on all drives and Remote Desktop access to their office PC.
  • Developers and IT learners who run virtual machines with Hyper-V or test software in Windows Sandbox.
  • Anyone joining a company network that uses a domain or Microsoft Entra ID.
  • People who build their own PC and want the most complete edition from the start.

If you are not sure, start with what you have. Upgrading from Home to Pro later is quick and does not need a reinstall.

Is Windows 11 Pro safer than Home?

Both editions get the same monthly security updates, the same Windows Security antivirus and firewall, Windows Hello sign-in and Secure Boot. So a Home PC that is kept up to date is not “unsafe”. Windows 11 Pro adds tools for specific risks: full BitLocker if a laptop with business data gets stolen, and Windows Sandbox to open suspicious files away from your real system.

Home or Pro for students and families?

For school work and family PCs, Windows 11 Home is usually all you need. Parental controls through Microsoft Family Safety work on both editions, and Office, browsers and learning apps run the same. Choose Windows 11 Pro only if the school or a parent’s employer asks for it, for example to connect to their network.

How to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro

You can upgrade an activated copy of Windows 11 Home to Pro from Settings (Microsoft: upgrade Home to Pro):

  1. Open Settings > System > Activation.
  2. Next to Change product key, select Change.
  3. Enter your 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key and select Next.
  4. Windows starts the upgrade to Pro.

Back up your files first, as before any big change. Microsoft also sells the upgrade in Microsoft Store under Upgrade your edition of Windows. Our Windows 11 Pro activation guide covers every step and the common error codes. Still on Windows 10? First upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free.

What stays the same when you upgrade

An upgrade from Home to Windows 11 Pro keeps your files, apps and settings. Your desktop looks the same; you just find new options, such as BitLocker in Settings, Remote Desktop under System and the Group Policy Editor. Restart once after the upgrade so everything is ready.

Can you go back from Pro to Home?

There is no simple button to switch from Pro back to Home. Going back usually means reinstalling Windows 11 Home and activating it with a Home license. Since Pro includes everything in Home, most people simply keep Pro and ignore the tools they do not use.

Hardware requirements are the same

Windows 11 Home and Pro have the same system requirements, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. If your PC can run Windows 11 Home, it can run Pro. Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox additionally need virtualization support in your processor and firmware. You can check your PC with the free PC Health Check app before you buy anything, or follow our Windows 11 requirements guide.

Other editions: Education, Enterprise and Pro for Workstations

Microsoft also makes Windows 11 Education, Enterprise and Pro for Workstations. These are mainly for schools, large companies and high-end workstations, and they are licensed differently. A Windows 11 Pro key only activates Windows 11 Pro: if you enter it on an Enterprise installation, activation fails with an edition error.

Checklist before you buy a Windows 11 Pro key

  • The key says Windows 11 Pro (not Home, Education or Enterprise).
  • It is for one PC, and you know which PC you will use it on.
  • You have an administrator account on that PC.
  • You know where to enter it: Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
  • The seller tells you what happens if activation fails and how to reach support.

Price: what does Windows 11 Pro cost?

Microsoft sells Windows 11 Pro and a Home-to-Pro upgrade in Microsoft Store, and prices depend on your country. Product keys from shops are another option. Whatever you choose, make sure the key is for Windows 11 Pro (not Enterprise or Education), so it activates on a normal Windows 11 PC. Be careful with offers that ask you to run unknown activation tools from random websites: such tools can install malware.
