Does Windows 11 Home Have BitLocker? Device Encryption Explained (2026)

Short answer: Windows 11 Home BitLocker support is limited: Windows 11 Home does not have full BitLocker. Microsoft says BitLocker Drive Encryption is only available on Windows Pro, Enterprise and Education. But Windows 11 Home has Device encryption, which uses BitLocker technology to encrypt your system drive automatically on supported PCs. If you need full BitLocker control, for example for USB drives, you need Windows 11 Pro.

This guide explains the difference between BitLocker and Device encryption in plain words, how to check and turn on encryption on Windows 11 Home, and when it is worth upgrading to Pro. Everything comes from Microsoft Support and Microsoft Learn, checked in October 2026.

  • Windows 11 Home: Device encryption on supported PCs
  • Windows 11 Pro: full BitLocker Drive Encryption
  • USB drives: only BitLocker To Go (Pro) encrypts them
  • Recovery key: saved to your Microsoft account
  • Upgrade: Home to Pro with a product key, no reinstall

Device encryption (Windows 11 Home) vs BitLocker (Windows 11 Pro).

Both protect the data on your PC if it is lost or stolen: without the key, nobody can read the drive. The difference is how much control you get:

Device encryption vs BitLocker Drive Encryption, from Microsoft Support and Microsoft Learn, October 2026.

Microsoft describes Device encryption as a Windows feature that turns on BitLocker encryption automatically for the operating system drive and fixed drives, made for everyday users who want their data safe without managing complex settings (Microsoft Support). Microsoft Learn adds that it does not encrypt external or USB drives. Device encryption also depends on your hardware: it needs a working TPM security chip, Secure Boot and the Windows Recovery Environment, which is why some PCs do not show it.

Does Windows 11 Home have BitLocker?

Not the full version. Microsoft’s BitLocker page says BitLocker Drive Encryption is only available on devices running Windows Pro, Enterprise or Education, and it is not available on Windows Home (Microsoft Support). If you type BitLocker in the Start menu and Manage BitLocker does not appear, you do not have the right edition.

What Windows 11 Home does have is Device encryption. On a supported PC it uses BitLocker in the background to protect your system drive, so for many home users it is enough.

How to check if Device encryption is on

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
  3. Check the switch. If it is On, your drive is encrypted.

If Device encryption does not appear in Settings, Microsoft says it is either not available on your device, or you are signed in with a standard user account instead of an administrator.

How to turn on Device encryption on Windows 11 Home

When you first set up a PC with a Microsoft account (or a work or school account), Device encryption is turned on automatically and the recovery key is saved to that account. With a local account it is not turned on automatically (Microsoft Support). To turn it on yourself:

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
  3. Set the switch to On.

Before you do, make sure you know where your recovery key will be saved. If you ever need it, for example after a hardware change, you cannot open the drive without it.

Why is Device encryption not available?

Microsoft explains how to find the reason in System Information:

  1. Type System Information in Start, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  2. In System Summary, look for Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support.

The value tells you what is wrong:

  • Meets prerequisites: Device encryption is available.
  • TPM is not usable: there is no TPM, or it is switched off in the BIOS/UEFI.
  • WinRE is not configured: the Windows Recovery Environment is not set up.
  • PCR7 binding is not supported: Secure Boot is off, or a device such as a docking station or external graphics card is connected during startup.

Good news for older laptops and desktops: Microsoft Learn says that from Windows 11 version 24H2, some old hardware prerequisites were removed, so more devices can use automatic and manual Device encryption. Our guide on Windows 11 requirements explains TPM and Secure Boot in plain words.

3 myths about Windows 11 Home and BitLocker

  • “Windows 11 Home has no encryption.” False. Home has Device encryption, which uses BitLocker to protect the system drive on supported PCs.
  • “Device encryption also protects my USB stick.” False. Microsoft says it only encrypts the operating system drive and fixed drives, not external or USB drives.
  • “To get BitLocker I must reinstall Windows.” False. You can upgrade Home to Pro with a product key from Settings, without a clean install.

Who benefits most from encryption?

Encryption matters most on devices that leave your home. A laptop can be lost in a taxi or stolen from a bag; without encryption, anyone can remove the drive and read your photos, documents and saved passwords. With Device encryption or BitLocker, the data stays locked without the key.

It is also useful if you keep work files, scans of ID documents or bank papers on your PC, or if several people use the same computer. On a desktop that never leaves the house, encryption is still a good habit, especially before you send the PC for repair or sell it.

Quick checklist

  1. Check Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
  2. If it is off and available, turn it on with an administrator account.
  3. Make sure you know where your recovery key is saved.
  4. Need USB encryption or more control? Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
  5. Keep Windows updated so security fixes keep coming.

When do you need full BitLocker (Windows 11 Pro)?

When you need Windows 11 Pro for BitLocker: USB drives, unsupported PCs, more control, business files
When full BitLocker on Windows 11 Pro is worth it.
  • You want to encrypt USB sticks or external drives with BitLocker To Go.
  • Device encryption is not available on your PC, but you still want to encrypt your drives.
  • You want to choose which drives to encrypt and how to unlock them.
  • You use a local account and want to manage encryption and recovery keys yourself.
  • You work with business or client data and need more control.

Windows 11 Pro also adds Remote Desktop, Hyper-V and other business features. See Windows 11 Home vs Pro for the full comparison.

How to use BitLocker on Windows 11 Pro

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Type BitLocker in Start and select Manage BitLocker.
  3. Next to the drive you want to protect, select Turn on BitLocker.
  4. Choose how to unlock the drive and back up the recovery key.
  5. Wait while the drive is encrypted. You can keep using your PC.

The BitLocker window lists your operating system drive, other fixed drives, and removable drives such as USB sticks under BitLocker To Go.

Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro for BitLocker

You can upgrade an activated copy of Windows 11 Home to Pro with a product key, without reinstalling Windows or losing your files (Microsoft). Go to Settings > System > Activation, select Change product key and enter your Windows 11 Pro key. Our guide on how to activate Windows 11 Pro shows every step and the common error codes.

Keep your recovery key safe

Encryption only helps if you can still open your own drive. Whether you use Device encryption or BitLocker, know where your recovery key is: in your Microsoft account if you set up the PC with one, or wherever you saved it when you turned on BitLocker. Never send your recovery key to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
