Does Windows 11 Home Have Remote Desktop? What You Can Do (2026)

Short answer: Windows 11 Home can use Remote Desktop to connect to another PC, but other people cannot connect into a Windows 11 Home PC with Remote Desktop. Microsoft says the PC you connect to must run Windows Pro. For help from a friend, Windows 11 Home users can use the free Quick Assist app instead. To host Remote Desktop, upgrade Home to Pro.

This guide explains Windows 11 Home Remote Desktop limits in plain words, how to set up Remote Desktop on Windows 11 Pro, how to connect from a PC, Mac, iPhone or Android, and when Quick Assist is the better choice. Everything comes from Microsoft Support, checked in October 2026.

  • Home: can connect to other PCs (client only)
  • Pro: can be connected to (Remote Desktop host)
  • Connect from: Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android
  • Free alternative: Quick Assist for help from someone you trust
  • Upgrade: Home to Pro with a product key, no reinstall

Does Windows 11 Home have Remote Desktop?

Windows 11 Home Remote Desktop: Home can connect to a Pro PC, but no device can connect into a Home PC
Windows 11 Home and Remote Desktop: the remote PC must run Pro.

Only in one direction. Microsoft lists two rules (Microsoft Support):

  • The remote PC, the one you want to connect to, must be running the Pro edition of Windows.
  • The client device, the one you connect from, can run any edition of Windows, Pro or Home, or even a different operating system.

So a Windows 11 Home laptop can open Remote Desktop and control your Windows 11 Pro desktop at the office. But nobody can use Remote Desktop to connect to that Home laptop, because a Home PC cannot be the remote PC.

Two examples

Example 1 – works: your office desktop runs Windows 11 Pro and your laptop at home runs Windows 11 Home. Turn on Remote Desktop on the office PC, and you can connect to it from the Home laptop in the evening.

Example 2 – does not work yet: your desktop at home runs Windows 11 Home and you want to reach it from work or while travelling. Because the home desktop is the remote PC, it needs Windows 11 Pro. Upgrade it with a Pro key, turn on Remote Desktop, and then you can connect from any Windows PC, Mac, iPhone or Android phone.

The rule is easy to remember: the PC you connect to needs Pro; the device you connect from can be almost anything.

One more thing: Microsoft’s basic steps assume both devices can reach each other, for example on the same home or office network. Connecting from outside that network usually needs extra network setup, such as a VPN. If the PC belongs to your employer, ask your IT team how they want you to connect.

How to check your Windows edition

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Under Windows specifications, look at Edition. It says Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.

If it says Home and you need to connect into this PC, you need to upgrade to Pro first. Not sure which edition fits you? See Windows 11 Home vs Pro.

How to turn on Remote Desktop on Windows 11 Pro

On the PC you want to connect to (it must run Windows 11 Pro), follow Microsoft’s steps (Microsoft Support):

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  2. Turn on Remote Desktop and select Confirm.
  3. Write down the name of the PC under PC name. You need it to connect.

From a Windows PC (Home or Pro)

In the taskbar search box, type Remote Desktop Connection and open it. Enter the PC name of the remote PC, select Connect and sign in with your account.

From a Mac, iPhone or iPad

Open Windows App from the Microsoft Store or the Apple App Store. Add the PC name of the remote PC and select it to start the connection.

From Android

Open the Remote Desktop app from Google Play. Add the PC name of the remote PC, select it and wait for the connection to complete.

Once connected, you can use your apps, files and desktop as if you were sitting in front of the remote PC.

Windows 11 Home Remote Desktop alternative: Quick Assist

If you just need help from a family member or a friend, you do not need Remote Desktop. Microsoft’s free Quick Assist app works on Windows 11 Home and Pro (Microsoft Support):

  1. Install Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store if it is not already on your PC.
  2. Open it with Start, or press Ctrl + Windows key + Q.
  3. The helper selects Help someone and gives you a 6-digit code.
  4. You enter the code under Code from assistant, select Submit, then Allow to share your screen.
  5. If they ask for full control, you can allow it, and you can cancel control or Leave at any time.

Microsoft warns about tech support scams: only allow a helper to connect if you started the contact yourself, for example by calling someone you know or by contacting Microsoft Support directly. Quick Assist lets the other person see your screen and even control your PC, so use it only with people you trust.

While helping, the helper can use tools such as a laser pointer, annotations and a chat for typing messages. Either person can end the session by selecting Leave.

The same rules apply to Windows 10: Microsoft’s Remote Desktop page covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10, and in both cases the remote PC needs the Pro edition.

Use Remote Desktop if you want to work on your own home or office PC from another place, for example from a laptop while travelling. Use Quick Assist when someone is sitting at the PC and needs help for a few minutes.

Who should upgrade from Windows 11 Home for Remote Desktop?

  • People working from home who want to reach their office or home PC from a laptop.
  • Freelancers and small businesses who want to open their main PC from a tablet or phone.
  • Anyone with a PC at home who wants to use its files and apps while away, without carrying it.

Windows 11 Pro also adds full BitLocker encryption, Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox and other business tools. See does Windows 11 Home have BitLocker? for the encryption side.

How to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro

You can upgrade an activated copy of Windows 11 Home to Pro with a product key, without reinstalling Windows (Microsoft). Go to Settings > System > Activation, select Change product key and enter your Windows 11 Pro key. Then turn on Remote Desktop with the steps above. Our guide on how to activate Windows 11 Pro covers every step and the common errors.

Cannot connect to a remote PC? Check these

  • Edition: check that the remote PC runs Windows 11 Pro (Settings > System > About).
  • Setting: check that Remote Desktop is turned on in Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  • PC name: type the exact PC name shown on the remote PC.
  • Power: the remote PC must be switched on and not asleep.
  • Account: sign in with an account that can sign in on the remote PC.

If you only need to help someone once, Quick Assist is often quicker than setting up Remote Desktop.

Remote Desktop safety tips

  • Use a strong password on the account you use to sign in remotely.
  • Turn Remote Desktop off when you no longer need it.
  • Never let a stranger connect, even if they say they are from Microsoft or your bank.
  • Keep Windows updated so security fixes are installed.
