Short answer: no. Windows 11 Home Hyper-V is not possible: Microsoft says the Hyper-V role cannot be installed on Windows 10 Home or Windows 11 Home, and Windows Sandbox is not supported on Home either. Both need Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise or Education. You can upgrade Home to Pro with a product key, then turn them on in a few minutes if your PC meets the hardware requirements.
This guide explains what Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox are, the requirements from Microsoft Learn, how to turn them on in Windows 11 Pro, and the options if you stay on Home. Checked in October 2026.
- Hyper-V: full virtual machines – Pro, Enterprise, Education only
- Windows Sandbox: throw-away desktop – not supported on Home
- Hardware: 64-bit CPU, virtualization on, at least 4 GB RAM
- Turn on: Turn Windows features on or off, or PowerShell
- Home users: upgrade to Pro with a product key

Windows 11 Home Hyper-V: the official answer

Microsoft’s requirements for Hyper-V on Windows list Windows 10 (Pro or Enterprise) or Windows 11 (Pro or Enterprise), and add a clear note: the Hyper-V role can’t be installed on Windows 10 Home or Windows 11 Home (Microsoft Learn). For Windows Sandbox, Microsoft lists Pro, Enterprise, Pro Education/SE and Education, and notes that Windows Sandbox is currently not supported on Windows Home edition (Microsoft Learn).
| Feature | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Hyper-V | No | Yes |
| Windows Sandbox | No | Yes |
| BitLocker | Device encryption only | Yes |
| Remote Desktop host | No | Yes |
These are the same kind of Pro-only tools as full BitLocker and Remote Desktop hosting.
What is Hyper-V?
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s built-in tool for virtual machines. A virtual machine is a complete computer that runs inside a window on your PC, with its own operating system. People use it to test software, run an older version of Windows or Linux, learn IT skills, or keep work and personal tasks apart.
Because Hyper-V is part of Windows 11 Pro, you do not need to buy or install a separate virtualization program.
What is Windows Sandbox?
Windows Sandbox is a lightweight, temporary desktop for running apps in isolation. Microsoft describes it as disposable: nothing stays on the device, and everything is deleted when you close it. Every time it starts, it is as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows (Microsoft Learn).
It is ideal for opening a file you do not trust, testing a program before you install it on your real system, or trying a setting without risk. It launches in a few seconds and uses less memory than a full virtual machine. Microsoft notes that only one Windows Sandbox can run at a time.
Hyper-V or Windows Sandbox: which do you need?
| Hyper-V | Windows Sandbox | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Full virtual machines | One temporary desktop |
| Saves changes | Yes | No, deleted on close |
| Other systems | Windows, Linux and more | Windows only |
| Setup | Create each machine | One click, starts clean |
Choose Windows Sandbox when you want to try something quickly and throw it away. Choose Hyper-V when you need a computer inside your computer that keeps its files and settings, for example a Linux test machine or an older Windows version for an old program.
Example uses
- Opening an unknown download: run it in Windows Sandbox first. When you close the Sandbox, everything it did is gone.
- Learning IT skills: build a small lab of virtual machines in Hyper-V without extra computers.
- Testing updates or settings: try them in a virtual machine before you change your real PC.
- Developers: test an app on a clean Windows every time with Windows Sandbox.
Hardware requirements

Even on Windows 11 Pro, your PC needs the right hardware. From Microsoft Learn:
| Hyper-V | Windows Sandbox | |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 64-bit with SLAT | AMD64 or Arm64 |
| Virtualization | CPU support needed | Enabled in BIOS |
| Memory | At least 4 GB | 4 GB (8 GB recommended) |
| CPU cores | – | 2 (4 recommended) |
| Disk space | – | 1 GB free (SSD recommended) |
Most PCs that can run Windows 11 meet these basics, but virtualization is sometimes switched off in the BIOS/UEFI settings. Our guide on Windows 11 requirements explains the firmware settings in plain words.
Before you turn on Hyper-V: check virtualization
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), select Performance and then CPU. Next to Virtualization it shows Enabled or Disabled. If it is disabled, turn on the virtualization option (often called Intel VT-x, Intel Virtualization Technology or AMD SVM) in your BIOS/UEFI settings. Your PC maker’s support page shows how to open them.
How to turn on Hyper-V in Windows 11 Pro
Microsoft gives these PowerShell steps (Microsoft Learn):
- Select Start and type Windows PowerShell.
- Right-click it and select Run as Administrator (the command fails without it).
- Run:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All - Enter Y to restart the computer and finish the installation.
Microsoft also lists a DISM command that does the same: DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V. When it works, you see “The operation completed successfully.”
How to turn on Windows Sandbox in Windows 11 Pro
Microsoft’s steps (Microsoft Learn):
- Make sure virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.
- In the taskbar search, type Turn Windows features on or off and open it.
- Select Windows Sandbox, then OK. Restart if asked.
- Open Windows Sandbox from the Start menu.
If the Windows Sandbox option is not in the list, Microsoft says your computer does not meet the requirements. You can also turn it on in PowerShell as administrator with Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName "Containers-DisposableClientVM" -All -Online.
Good to know: Microsoft says that from Windows 11 version 24H2, built-in Store apps such as Calculator, Photos, Notepad and Terminal are not available inside Windows Sandbox for now, and that support will be added later.
Using other virtualization apps
Microsoft notes that some third-party virtualization apps, such as VMware Workstation and VirtualBox, rely on the same processor features as Hyper-V. You can install Hyper-V without uninstalling them, but they may not work together at the same time. If you already use one of those apps, check its own documentation before you turn on Hyper-V.
Cannot turn on Hyper-V or Windows Sandbox? Check these
- Option missing: check your edition in Settings > System > About. On Home, Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox are not available.
- Command fails: PowerShell must be opened with Run as Administrator, or the commands fail.
- Sandbox not in the list: Microsoft says your computer then does not meet the requirements. Check memory, CPU cores and virtualization.
- Virtualization disabled: turn it on in the BIOS/UEFI and restart.
- Another virtualization app: VMware Workstation or VirtualBox may conflict while Hyper-V is in use.
No Windows 11 Home Hyper-V: what are your options?
If you only need a safe place to open a suspicious file once in a while, Windows 11 Home does not offer Windows Sandbox, so be careful with unknown files and keep Windows Security up to date. If you test software, learn IT or need virtual machines regularly, upgrading to Pro is the simplest route, because Hyper-V and Sandbox are then built in. The upgrade keeps your apps and files, and once Pro is active you can turn on Hyper-V or turn on Windows Sandbox in a few minutes with the steps above.
How to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro
You can upgrade an activated copy of Windows 11 Home to Pro with a product key, without reinstalling Windows (Microsoft). Go to Settings > System > Activation, select Change product key and enter your Windows 11 Pro key. Then turn on Hyper-V or Windows Sandbox with the steps above. Our guide on how to activate Windows 11 Pro covers each step and common errors, and Windows 11 Home vs Pro compares all features.
