Short answer: to activate McAfee, go to mcafee.com/activate, enter your 25-digit activation code, sign in to your McAfee account (or create one) and follow the steps to download and install McAfee. If you bought online, the code is in the email from the shop; on a store card it is on the back. That is the whole McAfee activate process, and it takes a few minutes. Whether you activate McAfee for the first time or add time to a McAfee subscription you already have, the steps start the same way.

What you need before you start
- Your McAfee activation code. It has 25 digits. On a store card it is printed on the back; if you bought online, McAfee says it is in the receipt email from the store.
- An email address for your McAfee account. If you already use McAfee, use the same email so everything stays in one account.
- The device you want to protect, with an internet connection to download the app.
Close other security apps you are trying out before you install McAfee. Two antivirus programs running at the same time can slow your PC down or get in each other’s way.
How to activate McAfee with an activation code
Follow these steps on the device you want to protect first:
- Open your browser and go to mcafee.com/activate.
- Enter your 25-digit activation code and continue.
- Sign in with your McAfee account, or create a new account with your email address.
- If McAfee asks about automatic renewal, choose what you prefer (you can turn it off later).
- Follow the on-screen steps to download and install your McAfee app.
McAfee notes that your subscription usually starts when you activate your software (McAfee help), so activate the code when you are ready to use it.
Already have McAfee? Extend, add or upgrade
If you redeem a new code while you are signed in to an existing McAfee account, McAfee’s activation page gives you choices:
- Extend one of your current subscriptions, so the new time is added and you do not need to reinstall your apps;
- Add another subscription instead, for example to protect more devices;
- Upgrade to a higher plan, where the time left on your old subscription moves to the new one.
Sign in with the same email as your current McAfee account, so McAfee can show you these options. If you create a new account by mistake, the new code starts a separate subscription.
How to install McAfee on your other devices
After you activate, open My Account on the McAfee website and sign in. From there you can download McAfee again or send a download link to your other devices, as long as your subscription covers them. McAfee’s subscription help explains how to manage and renew subscriptions in My Account.
Install McAfee on each device with the same account, so all of them use the same subscription.
How to activate McAfee on a phone, tablet or Mac
On a Mac, sign in to My Account in your browser and download the Mac version from there. On an Android phone or tablet, install McAfee Security from Google Play; on an iPhone or iPad, install it from the App Store. Open the app and sign in with the same McAfee account: your subscription is recognised, so you do not need to enter the activation code again.
Using one account for all devices also makes it easy to see later which devices are protected.
How long does a McAfee subscription last?
The length depends on the code you buy, for example 1, 2 or 3 years. Because the McAfee subscription usually starts when you activate, a code that waits a few weeks before you use it does not lose time. After you activate, My Account shows the exact end date.
Write that date down or turn on a reminder, so you can add a new code before your protection ends.
Moving McAfee to a new PC
When you replace your computer, sign in to My Account on the new PC and install McAfee from there with the same account. If your subscription covers a fixed number of devices, uninstall McAfee from the old PC first, so the new one can use that place.
Remove old antivirus before you install
If another paid antivirus is installed, remove it before you activate McAfee. On Windows 11 go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the old program and select Uninstall, then restart your PC. Some security companies also offer their own removal tool for leftovers.
You do not need to remove Microsoft Defender: it is part of Windows and steps aside when McAfee takes over.
How to check that McAfee is active
Open McAfee on your PC and look at the subscription status. If McAfee installed but does not show as active, right-click the McAfee icon in the taskbar and select Activate product, or Verify Subscription, depending on your version.
In My Account on the McAfee website you can also see each subscription, how many devices it covers and when it ends. Right after you activate McAfee, the app can take a moment to show your McAfee subscription; restart the app if it does not update.
How to turn off automatic renewal
During activation McAfee may set up automatic renewal for when your prepaid time ends. If you prefer to renew with a new code, you can turn auto-renewal off in My Account (McAfee: turn off auto-renewal). Your current subscription keeps running until its end date.
Keep your McAfee account safe
After you redeem the code, the subscription belongs to your McAfee account, not to the code. Use a strong, unique password for that account, and never share your activation code before you have redeemed it: whoever redeems it first gets the subscription.
McAfee activation not working?
- “Code already redeemed.” Each code works once. If you used it before, sign in to My Account and download McAfee from there.
- Wrong account. Check that you are signed in with the email that should hold the subscription.
- Typos. Type the 25 digits carefully. Copy-paste can add spaces at the start or end.
- Installed but not active. Right-click the McAfee icon in the taskbar and select Activate product.
- Old antivirus still installed. Remove other paid antivirus apps and restart before you install McAfee again.

Do you need McAfee if Windows has Microsoft Defender?
Windows includes Microsoft Defender in the Windows Security app (Microsoft). When you install another antivirus such as McAfee, Windows normally lets it take over real-time protection, so the two do not run on top of each other.
