Can you buy Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card?
Yes. Nintendo says you can buy or extend a membership by redeeming a Nintendo Switch Online download code, or by paying with a credit card, PayPal or your Nintendo eShop funds (Nintendo Support). A Nintendo eShop card adds funds to your account, so once the card is redeemed you can use that money for the membership.
First redeem the eShop card on the account that will use Nintendo Switch Online. Our guide on how to redeem a Nintendo eShop card shows the steps on Switch 2, Switch and the website.

How to pay for Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card
To get Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch:
- Redeem your eShop card first, so the funds are in your account.
- Select Nintendo eShop on the HOME Menu.
- Select the account you want to use.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online on the left side of the screen.
- Select Check/Change Membership and choose your plan.
- Choose Nintendo eShop funds as the payment method.
- Review the purchase, check Agree and select Purchase.
You can also buy a membership on the Nintendo website: sign in to your Nintendo Account, go to the Nintendo Switch Online page, scroll to “Compare membership plans” and select the price of the plan you want. Nintendo notes that an existing Expansion Pack Family membership can only be extended in Nintendo eShop on the console, not on the website.
Family memberships: the credit card rule
A Family membership covers up to 8 Nintendo Accounts. You can pay for it with eShop funds, but there are two rules (Nintendo Support):
- You must be 18 or older to buy or extend a Family membership.
- You must save a credit card or PayPal account as the auto-renewal method before you buy. After that, you can still pay for the membership itself with your eShop funds.
If you only have eShop cards and no card or PayPal, buy an Individual membership instead. If you already have an Individual membership, Nintendo offers a discounted price for a Family membership based on the days you have left.
Nintendo says that with eight people, a Family membership costs less than $5 per person a year, and an Expansion Pack Family membership about $10 per person (Nintendo).
What you get with Nintendo Switch Online

All Nintendo Switch Online memberships include:
- Online play in compatible games, for example Mario Kart and Splatoon.
- GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2, started with the C button.
- Nintendo Classics: NES, Super NES and Game Boy games.
- Save Data Cloud backup for compatible games.
- Special offers and the Nintendo Music app.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis and Virtual Boy games, Nintendo GameCube games on Switch 2, and select upgrade packs and DLC at no extra cost.
Standard membership or Expansion Pack?
Choose the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership if you mainly want to play online with friends, back up your saves and play the NES, Super NES and Game Boy classics. It is the cheapest way to play Mario Kart or Splatoon online.
Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you also want Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis and GameCube games, or the upgrade packs and DLC that are included at no extra cost. It costs $49.99 a year for one account, so with $10 eShop cards you need five.
Not sure? Start with the standard plan. If you already have an Individual membership, Nintendo lets you change to another plan, sometimes at a discounted price.
How auto-renewal works with eShop funds
Your membership is set to renew automatically at the end of the term with the payment method you chose. If you chose a credit card or PayPal, Nintendo uses your eShop balance first and charges the rest to your card or PayPal (Nintendo Support).
To stop the renewal, turn off auto-renewal at least 48 hours before the membership ends. Your membership stays active until the end of the term, but you do not get a refund for the time left. Nintendo also warns that once auto-renewal is turned off, it cannot be turned on again for that membership (Nintendo Support).
Automatic renewal is not available for Nintendo Accounts under 18. If your child has their own Nintendo Account, a parent can also add them to a Family membership.
Extending Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card
You can add time to an active membership by buying the same plan again. Nintendo lets you extend a membership up to three years in total. This is a good way to use eShop cards: redeem them when you get them and buy another year before the current one ends.
If you redeem a code for a different plan, the memberships may run at the same time instead of being combined. If you already belong to a Family membership, you cannot buy or switch to an Individual membership.
Giving Nintendo Switch Online as a gift
Giving Nintendo Switch Online with an eShop card is easy. Send the code to the person, they redeem it on their own Nintendo Account and then buy the membership with the funds. Check their account country first: a US card only works on a US account. For a full year, send two $10 cards, and tell them to keep the codes private until they redeem them.
Region: use a US card on a US account
A US Nintendo eShop card only works on a Nintendo Account set to the United States, and Nintendo Switch Online prices depend on the country of your account. Check your country before you buy: our guide on how to check your account region shows where. In the US your eShop balance cannot go above $800 (Nintendo).
Free trial and tips to save
- Free trial: Nintendo offers a free 7-day trial of the standard membership. It turns into a paid 1-month membership unless you turn off auto-renewal before it ends.
- Pay yearly: 12 months at $19.99 costs much less than twelve 1-month payments of $3.99.
- Share it: a Family membership for up to 8 accounts is the cheapest per person.
- Keep your codes safe: a gift card code works like cash. See what is a gift card code for six safety rules.
